Wellwood’s Karla Jones, Manager of Volunteer Engagement, recently spoke with volunteer Marlene, who asked if she could sent some pictures of the finished afghans created from the donated squares. Thanks to Marlene, we can also share these images with all of you!
“I think it’s important for everyone to know, that it takes many hands to make this program a success. Without each and every one of you, we wouldn’t be able to distribute, on average, 50 afghans a week at the Juravinski Cancer Centre.” states Karla. “It’s the volunteers who knit or crochet the squares or complete a whole afghan, assemble the squares, wash the afghans, hand sew a Wellwood label onto every afghan so the recipients know where to send their words of gratitude, final package, deliver the finished bags of afghans from our community site to the hospital site and finally, distribute to the patients in the cancer centre. I’ve estimated there are over 100 dedicated volunteers who have kept this program running for nearly 20 years. That is incredible.“
She continues, “Please know how much we appreciate your time, talent and the cost invested in every afghan! We are always looking for more knitters. If you have a friend, neighbour or group buddy, please feel free to invite them along this journey. I hope you enjoy the pictures.”
